Omarion Speaks
Monday, March 26, 2007
Shelia Goss: How's the movie you're working on coming along?
Omarion: Everything is wrapped up and ready to go. I got two films coming out (Somebody Help Me & Reggaeton).
Shelia: Congrats. 2007 is a busy year for you already.
Omarion: 2007 is going to be a beautiful year.
Shelia: Your previous album did well. Did you feel any pressure with 21?
Omarion: Yes, of course a little, but the man upstairs brought me through. I consider 21 my most personal album and my best work. It's been getting great feedback. You always want to know it was a good album, even if nobody goes out and get it.
Shelia: Who all did you work with on 21?
Omarion: I worked with Bryan Michael Cox, The Underdogs, Eric Hudson, Pharrell and Timberland. This is by far my most personal album. Out of twelve of the songs, I wrote eight. I'm getting my pen game up with writing a little bit.
Shelia: Do you feel like you’re competing with other male artists, such as the Chris Browns, & Ne-yo’s?
Omarion: No. Competing on the charts. Everyone competes on the charts because there is only one number one record. I feel like as an artist, I have my own style… I have my style of dancing and the way I perform that sets me apart.
Shelia: Do you have time for a relationship?
Omarion: No, I don't have time for a relationship unfortunately. I'm really just laying my foundation right now.
Shelia: I was watching Dr. Phil recently and there was a person on the show who was a groupie to the point of being a stalker. Do you ever come across any fans who cross the line?
Omarion: Sometimes I meet some really outrageous people, but for the most part, they are all cool. I try to have a cool relationship with my fans.
Shelia; How was your experience on Jennifer Lopez's new dance show?
Omarion: It was cool. Didn't have to do much but just be real.
Shelia: Is there anything else you would like to say to your fans before you go?
Omarion: I love you guys. Thank you for all of your support. Keep God first and that's what's up.

Keyshia Cole & EA Ski Take Center Stage
BOOST MOBILE ROCKCORPS CONCERT
MONDAY, APRIL 9 AT SAN FRANCISCO'S "THE GRAND"
New York, NY- Boost Mobile RockCorps (BMRC), the national youth volunteerism movement that has motivated more than 16,000 young people to get involved and help their communities, today announced that platimun recording artist recording artists Keyshia Cole and Bay-area rap legend EA Ski are to perform at this year's BMRC concert event at San Francisco's "The Grand" at The Regency Center on April 9 in celebration and reward the hard-working local youth who have volunteered four hours of community service in Oakland through BMRC to earn tickets to this ultra-exclusive event.
RockCorps, an organization harnessing the power of music to inspire volunteerism, and Boost Mobile, a wireless telecommunications brand dedicated to boosting the lives of today's youth, continue their highly successful partnership for the third year in a row. BMRC exposes young people to simple and fun ways they can proactively contribute to their neighborhoods and positively transform society. Combining the power of music, community and volunteerism, Boost Mobile RockCorps will offer entrance to this summer's most popular concerts for which the only way in is to earn tickets by contributing four hours of volunteer service.
A recent comparison of BMRC and non-BMRC participants illustrates the impact of the program on today's young people. Findings suggest close to 80% of BMRC volunteers are likely to volunteer again in the future - without a concert ticket/reward. Additionally, 73% of participants who attended the BMRC concert conveyed it gave them a sense of how powerful volunteer work can be. Music has the power to bring people together, and Boost Mobile RockCorps is channeling this power as a catalyst for making volunteering cool and relevant to today's youth.
Youth interested in becoming part of the Boost Mobile RockCorps movement can call BMRC at 1-888-ROCK-889, or log onto www.boostmobilerockcorps.com for more information and to register for membership. Opportunities to volunteer are as followed:
Keep Oakland Beautiful
Date: Friday, April 6
Location: Lake Merritt
Project Details: BMRC volunteers will converge on this central park, which is often termed the "jewel of Oakland". Volunteers will circle the lake cleaning debris out of this resource, and refurbishing the fountains. We will also place gravel, fix fences and beautify the nation's oldest wildlife nature refuge, which is home to many ducks, geese, birds and other wildlife. Other tasks will include re-planting the humming bird garden and building garden planters and filling them with annuals.
Friends of Sausal Creek
Date: Saturday, April 7
Location: Diamond Park
Project Details: BMRC volunteers will assist with riparian (creek) restoration on the Sausal Creek Watershed. This area is infused with non-native plants and erosion that threaten the wildlife and water quality of the watershed. Volunteers will remove exotic species, re-plant native species, place erosion blankets to control slippage, and other restoration tasks.
About RockCorps
RockCorps is an organization that harnesses the power of music to inspire volunteerism. Based on the early work of The Greenbucks Foundation, RockCorps was founded in 2003 to affect social change and act as the bridge between communities in need and the young adults who want to make them better. RockCorps' goals are to introduce volunteerism to teens and young adults, motivate people to volunteer in their community and launch a national movement. The company has formulated a unique blend of music, community and volunteerism to expose young people to simple ways they can proactively contribute to the greater good. The program employs music as an incentive to entice and then funnel volunteers through established non-profit organizations. By completing four hours of community service, each participant receives a ticket to a signature RockCorps event which features performances by some of the hottest names in music. Experience shows that after volunteering once with RockCorps, young people are twice as likely to do it again.
About Boost Mobile
Based in Irvine, California, Boost Mobile is a lifestyle-based telecommunications brand focused on offering premium Pay-As-You-Go wireless phones and services to the youth market. Boost Mobile is dedicated to boosting the lives of today's young people by contributing to youth development programs. Five Questions with William Fredrick Cooper
Tuesday, March 20, 2007
Shelia, "Six Days In January" was something that had to be written, as it was a catharsis. In order to unburden my soul, find emotional closure with some painful experiences, there had to be a gut check. Six Days In January was that gut check. A lot of tears where shed through the process, especially in the middle of the novel where I told a scene exactly how it happened. But all in all the cleansing helped me deliver a message about men battling the same issues and insecurities as women, even more so because our egos conceal the struggle. Despite our gender differences and dysfunctions, men and women are very similar. WE ALL HAVE BEEN HURT. WE ALL HURT. AND ALL WE REALLY WANT IS TO BE LOVED AND RESPECTED.
With your new book, There's Always a Reason, what message do you hope readers walk away with after reading it?
There are so many messages I tried to deliver with REASON, but the two that stand out are as follows:
A) We Need Each Other - I tried to exhibit this in the clearest possible form. So often we hide behind the walls of pain, anger and fear that we don't think we need the help of our fellow man, and sometimes the manifestations of this sort of selfishness can be destructive both to ourselves and others.
Yes, in relationships as well. Simply put: We were not made to be alone. Often times because we've experienced so many disappointments, we forget this, or choose to ignore this. It frustrates me when I hear both sexes say this, because all the hiding from all that love has to offer is a byproduct of fear. Everybody needs somebody to love. Period.
B) All things in life do happen for a reason - Though we might not always understand the fortunes and misadventures of this crazy thing known as life, the tests we are given are to teach us lessons. The key is to realize such, as William and Linda did in the novel.
How did you feel when you found out There's Always a Reason was chosen as a main selection for Black Expressions Book Club?
Great Question, Shelia. After my initial shock, I tried to downplay it. But Nathasha Brooks-Harris sat me down and really explained its significance, which made me really think about the accomplishment: Here's what I came up with:
When I think of MAIN SELECTION, I always thought of E. Lynn Harris, the late Bebe Morre Campbell, Pearl Cleage, Eric Jerome Dickey, Terry McMillan, Carl Weber, Mary B. Morrison, Omar Tyree and my publisher Zane. I never imagined this. I am so grateful that Carol Mackey thought enough of the story.
It also made me think of Timm McCann, who sat me down on a cruise in 2001 and unselfishly passed along knowledge that I carry to this day. (God, I miss him) It made me think of Marcus Major, C. Kelly Robinson and other brothers who wrote from the depths of their soul, Eric Pete, Earl Sewell, Christopher Chambers, Brian Egeston, Vincent Alexandria and others from the new breed that deserve this honor as much if not moreso than myself. Although I was selected, it's a victory for US, because it's a major statement that the torch can be passed. I only hope THERE'S ALWAYS A REASON does us all proud.
In what ways can men and women express their wants and needs to each other without coming across as nagging or complaining?
Communication and a spritual yoke. Honest, open talk about our needs and desires, as well as having God at its center. And the willingness by both parties to give their hearts fearlessly. I have nothing to prove to a woman and neither does she to me. That many of us think this way is another defense mechanism by way of fear. Let that go and the bitching stops, and the solutions come.
What can readers expect next from you?
This is going to be a busy year. After REASON, In April "I Want to (bleep) You", an erotica collaboration with Jessica Tilles will appear in her forthcoming novel Unfinished Business (Another must read). Then in July (giggle)... "DEAR ZANE... A LUST LETTER FROM A FAN ." appears in her non-fiction book DEAR G-SPOT. All I can say about this one is that it is the steamiest story I have ever written. It's plot? Well... you just have to read it to believe it. August I'll be in EROGENOUS ZONE, a collection of erotic stories edited by Jessica Tilles. (Shows where my mind is between novels, huh? -LOL.)
My next novel won't be out until late 2010. How Come, How Long deals with rape and forgiveness. I only hope I pull it off.
Critics have highly praised William Fredrick Cooper's latest book There's Always a Reason. It's in stores now.

ABOUT VEGAS VAMPIRES
When night falls upon Las Vegas, the vampires of the underground emerge. Lead vampire "Q" (Alex Wilkinson) is on a quest for the perfect bride with whom he can breed generations of vampires and continue his reign. Meanwhile, the Las Vegas police department is in hot pursuit of whoever is behind a series of slayings in the city's hottest nightclubs. A conflict emerges between Officer Johnson (Tommy 'Tiny' Lister) and Officer Patterson (Glenn Plummer) and head detective Burns (Daniel Baldwin), who wants to suppress the truth - vampires are taking over his city. The plot thickens when Patterson is found dead, an apparent victim of a bite to the neck. Left to crack the case alone, Johnson sets out to avenge the death of his partner and end "Q's" reign of terror.
The film pays "tribute" to Richard Roundtree's iconic character John Shaft, by recreating fight sequences in the spirit of the Blaxploitation film favorite, "Shaft"
Directed by former Oakland Raiders/Kansas City Chiefs football star turned actor/director Fred Williamson. Williamson, one of the first African-American male action stars during 1970's, has achieved a long and illustrious career as a director, writer and producer including Down and Dirty, On The Edge and TV's Lexie.

Interview with Singer Dayna Caddell

A Living Testimony
By Shelia M Goss
There is no doubt that Dayna Caddell is an anointed singer. Not only can she sing, but she's a talented songwriter as well. Caddell uses her voice to testify to others about God's goodness.
In 1991, Caddell was hit by a drunk driver and suffered severe back and hip injuries. "When folks looked at my car, they were surprised that I survived," says Caddell.
She was disabled for three and a half years and had to go through extensive therapy. "Thank God I’m walking normally now. Unless I'm in extreme pain, there's no reason for me to pull out the cane," Caddell says about her condition.
She goes on to say, "Every day is painful but I'm grateful because I no longer need a cane. I no longer have a limp. People aren't picking and probing at me every day. It's just becomes a way of life. So I ache a little; it's okay because a lot of people have it a lot worse. I'm blessed."
Caddell admits that she wasn't saved prior to her accident. "Of course I had an understanding of God. I knew God loved me and I loved God, but I was just living life. I wasn't living life according to God's will. But now it's a whole different story."
After the accident, Caddell realized she needed to get her spiritual life in order. Although it took a few more incidents after that for her to finally get the message, she did. She overcame her physical issues with much prayer, meditation and determination. "I had to close myself off and concentrate on God. I thought I was too young to be just sitting here and being miserable. I was quite angry and bitter for some time, but God showed me that it wasn't going to get me anywhere and I wasn't going to achieve anything with that attitude. The wanting and needing to be a normal person helped motivate me too."
Caddell advises anyone going through a situation no matter how large or small to "Seek God." She knows first hand if you give it to God, he will fix it.
Caddell plans on reaching people through her songs of praise. "I think it's important to be able to reach out to people and draw them in through music. My goal is to lead people to seek God."
Hope means different things to different people. For Caddell, hope is simple. She states, "Hope is living for God. Hope is seeking God and giving your life to God. Hope is having a relationship with God. Without it, you can't have hope; you're pretty much hopeless."
Dayna Caddell life is a living testimony. Be on the lookout for her CD later on this year. Visit her website at www.myspace.com/daynacaddell or http://www.cdbaby.com/cd/daynacaddell.

Interview with Dr. Suzan Johnson Cook
Roadmap to a New Beginning
By Shelia M. Goss
With the beginning of each new year, people are busy making goals and trying to find ways to help improve different areas of their lives. While making your new year plans, don’t forget to make time for God. "Live Like You're Blessed: Simple Steps for Making Balance, Love, Energy, Spirit, Success, Encouragement, and Devotion Part of Your Life" by Dr. Suzan Johnson Cook (Dr. Sujay) is written to show you how to find balance.
When President Clinton was in office, Dr. Sujay served on the Advisory Board of the President's Initiative on Race and Domestic Policy Council. Dr. Sujay resides in New York City with her husband and two sons and she's also the senior pastor of Believers Christian Fellowship. Dr. Sujay has traveled all over the nation spreading the gospel.
Dr. Sujay penned the phrase "Too Blessed to Be Stressed" in a previous book. Those few words have helped encourage millions. With her latest book, she wanted to write something to help people overcome anxiety after the horrendous 9-11 attack in New York City. "The book shows how to bounce back and move forward to a blessed life," says, Dr. Sujay.
Dr. Sujay lives the life she writes about. "I'm a multi-tasker, an author, a mother, I have a husband, I have a congregation and I am a speaker. The biggest word for me is balance—mind, body and spirit. Balance is a big part of it and the word boundaries. Everybody can't have a piece of you all the time. You have to put up boundaries whether it's professionally or personally. There should be times where people can't have access to you. I have set times where there's no computer on, no radio, no telephone. There's renewal and restoring. David says in Psalm 23, '...He leadeth me beside the still waters…He restoreth my soul...' Restore means without other things going on; taking time for God...for you and not feeling guilty about it."
Dr. Sujay continues, "God created us to be whole. God even rested. I'm in the midst of a sabbatical and people are like, how can you do that, you're a pastor? If you're not whole, you can't lead people to wholeness. There's a Proverbs (11:1) that says, "A false balance is abomination to the LORD: but a just weight is his delight." A child of God needs time."
One tip that Dr. Sujay says will help women's lives be less stressful is the word, No. "No is a complete sentence. We say yes, to so many things. Learn to say no."
Dr. Sujay's the goddaughter of Coretta Scott King. "The Kings meant so much to us. The quality of life that we enjoy is because of them. I was honored to be part of her homegoing service," states Dr. Sujay.
Mrs. King was a great role model to Dr. Sujay and she's carrying on the torch by being actively involved in the community. Dr. Sujay suggests to those looking for ways to help others, "Find a support group that has your interests at heart and find someone you can support. You must give back in life."
For a road map on how to live a blessed life, pick up a copy of Dr. Suzan Johnson Cook's book "Live Like You're Blessed." Visit http://www.drsujay.com/ for more information.

Monday, March 05, 2007
Business and entertainment have gone hand in hand throughout my career. At a given point I was heavily involved in the business end of the music industry. I worked with Marvin Gaye in his small production company, Righton Productions, then was a personal manager, partnering with Pete Peterson, to manage several recording artist including New Birth. Thereafter, I was property administrator of The Watts Industrial Park, the VP of a female owned steel fabricating company, an international trade export company, and VP Co-Owner of an Office Products firm. Throughout each of those ventures I was writing. I created my greeting card line, Nudgies, during the time I managed the industrial park. I was constantly writing poetry, short stories, and started writing novels. I actually was offered a movie option based on three chapters of a novel I was working on once. That's what created my interest in screenwriting. A little later I wrote the Knoll Frames screenplay and then adapted it for stage, both of which won awards or ranked well in competitions. Then I wrote You Beckon, my poetry collection, and I continue to write all of the above on an ongoing basis!
Why did you decide to release You Beckon as an e-book?
I really was torn about that. You Beckon has been very well received as a paperback book and has gotten excellent reviews since its release. It even won an award or two. The one thing it has not had though has been wide distribution. Although the major bookstores offer it, it wasn't readily available on their shelves oftentimes. People who heard about it, who were excited about it and went looking for it to purchase had to "wait" for it to be ordered for them. That was inhibiting. Since e-books are now a true part of a large portion of the reading public's daily lives making You Beckon available to them in e-book form gives them instant access! Eliminating the wait has been a real bonus. That's a win-win for everyone.
What other projects are you currently working on?
This year should see at least two novels released. One a political thriller that has been years in the making, and the other a mystery, that is the first in a mystery series. Additionally, there is a joint project that I'm very excited about with several incredible writers! I am a freelance entertainment writer, I'm editor of Emerging Music for Bellaonline.com, I'm a contributing writer for Suite101.com, and a blogger, so I'm constantly working on projects in those non-fiction arenas. My blog, Living on the Tip of My Pen, is included in Top10Sources.com's Arts and Culture/Writing Women section.
Which is more difficult to write? Articles, poetry or novels?
I think my answer there is changing. I used to lament novel writing, saying I'm more a sprinter than a long distance runner, but I believe that novel writing is such an intrigue it is becoming my favorite.
What advice would you give aspiring writers?
Listen to your own heart and follow where it leads you, regardless! Writers write. They must! So disregard discouragement, ignore those who question your right to give your craft your quality time, energy, and devotion. This is your gift. Honor it.

ABOUT MY BROTHER
Two Brothers, One Soul...
My Brother is an inner city, New York, story, of two impoverished boys, one of whom is developmentally disabled, and the bond of love they have for each other. This bond, forged in their youth by their mother, and made under life's most desperate circumstances, is unwavering even in the face of adversity. In the present, one brother, trying to get free of oppressing debt, falls prey to ruthless men, setting into motion life-threatening events that test their greater-than-blood bond. This leads to a decision that only an epiphany, and courage, can overcome.

5 Questions with Author Jermaine Watkins
No, not just yet... And the 546-page manuscript I'm presently re-working is Women's Fiction, without the Christian bent, unlike my current release, THE HARLOT.
How many books are in The Hartford Series?
There are only 2 books in the Hartford Series so far: A CHANGE OF HEART and THE HARLOT. Yes, I have already begun the third novel, which continues the suspenseful, scorching storyline that readers will enjoy in THE HARLOT: BOOK 2 OF THE Hartford Series. In the Harlot, readers will be introduced to Silvia, a young woman who has fallen into the business of selling herself for cash. Like many women, in the past, Silvia had other, more ambitious dreams: She'd been a studying actress, both at the high school and college levels. Now the wayward path she'd chosen has her at the wrong place at the right time. The FBI is trailing Silvia, on the hunt for one of her regular, lethal clients. However, God has other plans for her life, to set her back on track... all so she can deliver a special gift of love that can save the entire world.
What genre does your novels fall in?
I straddle the lines, from book to book, genre to genre. Although A CHANGE OF HEART deals with the supernatural, it's more inspirational and literary. THE HARLOT combines genres that women can't get enough of: suspence, romance, and the supernatural.
Are you writing full-time? If not, what is your day-job?
I work as an Office Administrator for a reputable company here in Connecticut. However, my goal is to go back to writing full-time, as soon as it's the right time.
What advice do you have for aspiring writers?
First, believe that God will see you through to publication. I feel fortunate that I’ve always known what I wanted to do, and to take it seriously enough to prepare for the long fight ahead. My hard work is a product of faith, and faith a product of my sincere belief in God, Who certainly must have created each one of us to become more than just job seekers, bill payers, fathers, mothers, et cetera. Who is undoubtedly the hardest worker in existence? The Creator Himself. He didn’t just have faith to produce galaxies, universes, stars, moons, planets, and life and all its many splendors—He worked hard to make it so. And if you have faith that writing is your destiny, you keep right on having it, and working toward it, and making it so, too.
Secondly, take a writing course, or find an editor to work with, one who might take you under his or her wing. Work tirelessly at defining your "tone" and refining your stories to near-perfection. Don’t be in such a rush for publication, concentrate on your stories. Trust me about this: Once your writing is flawless, the right publisher will be ready to accept you.

The movie stars Allen Payne as Cedric Tinsley. Cedric is a professional basketball player who loves to play on and off the field. His life-long friend, Summer, is played by Elise Neal. Summer is not only his friend, but his publicist. Contrary to his friends dismay, Cedric feels he's ready to get engaged and he plans on proposing to his long time girlfriend Jill at "The Playas Ball," a party/ charity event hosted by Summer's boyfriend (played by Treach of Naughty by Nature).
Cedric's multi-million dollar endorsement contract is in jeopardy due to a morals clause when Tonya, a woman he claims to not know, files for child support for her 5 month old son. His relationship with Jill is also threatened. Cedric's life is turned upside down as he goes on a quest to prove his innocence.
A few other celebrities make cameo appearances in the movie.
The Playas Ball is filled with substance and although there are a few funny scenes, this is a drama. I would have liked to have seen this at the movie theaters, but it went straight to video. I would recommend you adding it to your movie collection.
Allen Payne has proven once again, he's the perfect leading man. ~ Shelia M. Goss, author of My Invisible Husband & Entertainment Writer for e-Spire Entertainment & BellaOnline Women in Music
