The Brandon T. Jackson Show

NEW YORK, October 30, 2006 - Brandon T. Jackson is a true-to-life "son of a preacher man," who's delivering his hometown Detroit humor to teens across America in his very first sketch comedy special, The Brandon T. Jackson Show. The N, the nighttime network for teens, premieres the new half-hour special Friday, November 24 at 9:00 p.m. (ET) and will encore Sunday, November 26 at 11 p.m. (ET).

"The Brandon T. Jackson Show features a unique brand of sketch comedy that is sure to be a hit with our teen viewers," said Sarah Tomassi Lindman, Vice President, Production and Programming, The N. "The filter through which Brandon views the world, combined with his irreverence and quick wit makes for a great half-hour of comedy."

While growing up in Detroit, Jackson found school to be dull and unbearable, but comedy provided him the perfect outlet to get through it. This self-titled "class clown" honed his comedy skills by performing in talent shows at youth nights at his father's church. By the time Jackson was teenager, his career as a stand‑up comic evolved from local school shows to community projects such as the Motor City Youth Festival. Jackson continued on his road to success when his internship at local Detroit radio station led to a guest-host position its rival station. As his following grew, so did his hunger for stand-up comedy.

Soon Jackson was working side-by-side with many of today’s top comedians, including Chris Tucker and Wayne Brady, and delivered side-splitting performances at New York City's legendary Showtime at the Apollo and BET's Comic View. He quickly made the transition from stand-up comedian to Hollywood actor when he was cast in his first major movie role as Bow Wow's former best friend Junior in the motion picture Roll Bounce. In the past year, Jackson launched and hosted the Teens of Comedy Tour (featuring Lil JJ and presented by BET) and served as host on singer Chris Brown's 30-city US Tour.

Jackson's upcoming projects include a starring role in the indie film Cuttin the Mustard and a character role opposite Rob Schnieder in Big Stan. A national tour is currently in the works for his comedy show featuring other talented young comedians and musicians. One of seven siblings, Jackson draws upon his comedy from his childhood experiences in the inner city and credits his sense of humor to his dad, Bishop Wayne T. Jackson (his mother also serves as the Pastor of their church). Jackson counts comedians Sinbad, Martin Lawrence and Chris Rock as his source of inspiration and much of his comedy touches upon politics, the ups and downs of being young, dating and God. He aspires to be the funniest man in America – without cursing – and hopes to reshape the world of comedy into one that inspires, teaches and uplifts people.

Along with Emmy Award winner and comedian Wayne Brady, both actors co-created, starred and executive produced the half-hour special. Brady recently wrapped the independent film I’m Perfect and the romantic comedy Crossover with Anthony Mackie and Sydney Timiia Poitier. Last fall he finished a run on the Broadway production of Chicago.

Robert Teitel and George Tillman Jr. serve as executive producers for The Brandon T. Jackson Show. Teitel and Tillman have teamed up as executive producer and writer for hit films and television adaptations including Soul Food, Men of Honor, Barbershop, Barbershop 2: Back in Business, Beauty Shop and Roll Bounce. Their production company, State Street Pictures, has many films currently in development, including: College, Stephon’s Corner, Champions and The Interrogator.

The N, the nighttime network for teens, is a programming arm of MTV Networks and is currently available in 52 million households via cable, digital cable and satellite television. The N's mission is to be the authentic voice for teens and help them figure out their lives with relevant, topical programming on-air and online at the network's web site www.the-n.com. The N airs everyday from 6:00 p.m. to 6:00 a.m. (ET). The N and all related titles, characters and logos are trademarks of Viacom International Inc.

Give Back - Hip Hop for Hope

Dear Neighbors and Friends

On Thursday, November 16th, 2006, a coalition of students, in partnership with Tulane University in New Orleans, LA and the Martin Luther King Jr. Charter School for Science and Technology, will host a unique event called “Hip-Hop for Hope.” The goal of this event is to raise money to support educational programming at MLK and to raise awareness about two key community issues, Education and HIV/AIDS. We write seeking your support in fulfilling this dual mission. MLK reopened September 19, 2006 and serves 368 children from throughout Greater New Orleans. With your help, Hip-Hop for Hope can both contribute to the revitalization effort underway in New Orleans by bringing people from throughout the city together for an afternoon of fun and festivity and an evening of music appreciation. Beginning at 3:30 PM, November 16, Hip-Hop for Hope will host a block-party on Magazine St. & Napolean Ave.; a concert at Tipatina’s will follow, beginning at 7:00PM. The “Block-Party,” open to people of all ages, will be held in Laurence Park. Student groups, businesses, and non-profits will unite in celebration of New Orleans culture as well as to raise awareness about education and healthcare issues relevant to the New Orleans community. We will call particular attention to the HIV/AIDS because of the disproportionate, increasing rates of infection among minority youth. We will have tables’ set-up for different organizations that have joined us in support, as well as concessions, entertainment, and a raffle. Later that night, a benefit concert will be held a short distance away at the legendary music venue, Tipitina’s. The concert will feature performances by local hip-hop artists, appearances by various community leaders, and other entertainment throughout the night. We are asking that you support us in any way that you can—money, product donations, and services will all be graciously accepted. In return your business will be listed as a sponsor on all print ads and on the T-shirts, according to the tier (platinum, gold, bronze) within which your donation falls. We are also currently looking for businesses to serve as title sponsors and would be glad to have you take that role. This is an event that we would like to see become an annual New Orleans affair; hopefully you can become a fixture at the event in years to come. In an era where music and entertainment is able to influence a generation of youth from a variety of backgrounds, it is important for us to come together to set an example of cooperation and open communication. Let us use the deeply rooted traditions of hip-hop and its broad appeal amongst various social boundaries to deliver a message of hope, dedication and education and to promote the bright future of New Orleans youth.

Akon Up Close and Personal Interview

Wednesday, October 25, 2006

Shelia Goss: Congratulations on your new CD Konvicted.
Akon:
It's an incredible album. The CD has 14 songs. 12 plus 2 bonus tracks. It'll be out on November 14th. I'm real excited about it. Smack That jumped from 95 to #7 making billboard history.

Shelia: Congrats on that too.
Akon:
Thanks. We've put out 2 singles simultaneously.

Shelia: What can listeners expect differently with Konvicted?
Akon:
The previous one (Trouble) had a format that was perfect. I kept the same format on this album, it's just a step up as far as the production. It's more internationally driven because I wanted to make sure I grabbed every genre.

Shelia: Are any of the songs on Konvicted reflective of things that have happened to you in your life?
Akon:
Yes, it's like a continuation from the Trouble album. A lot of the songs I wrote for Konvicted are like a follow through to the songs on Trouble.

Shelia: Trouble was a good CD. I like the fact that you mixed it up. Do you still have that same mixture on Konvicted?
Akon:
Yes. I give you a mix of everything.

Shelia: You have a distinctive voice to me. Did you always know you wanted to do this?
Akon:
Personally I didn't want to in the beginning because I was surrounded by music all my life, so I was running from it.

Shelia: Really?
Akon:
Yes. Growing up, I was always surrounded by musicians. After I got into that trouble, got locked up and when I got out I couldn't work a regular 9 to 5 like everybody else because of being locked up. The only jobs available were minimum wage. With today's economy, it's hard to survive on minimum wage with car notes, light bills, etcetera so I had to find another way to keep a lifestyle and live day to day. I was making songs as a hobby, so when all that happened that's when I realized I was going to be an artist and give it a shot.

Shelia: How do you juggle your different business entities with finding time with your family and friends?
Akon:
You really can't juggle because you'll end up tangling yourself up or burning yourself out. I prioritize what's important at the time. Sometimes the business is more important; sometimes the family is more important. Sometimes you have to cancel business things to make sure your family's straight and then there are times when you might have to cancel a family event because this particular business will set you all up for the next 2 to 3 years. So I juggle it according to the importance.

Shelia: Are you going to get into acting and if so, do you have any upcoming movies?
Akon:
That's the next step. I'm working on my film now. It's kind of like a biography. We start casting in February. We'll be filming in several locations and shooting some of it in Africa.

Shelia: Will you be producing it?
Akon:
I'm producing it and creating the soundtrack.

Shelia: I read somewhere there that you have a diamond supply and mining company. Is that correct?
Akon:
Yes. Aliaune diamonds. We distribute diamonds to wholesalers.

Shelia: What about stores?
Akon:
Our connection is to the wholesalers.

Shelia: What else do you have going on?
Akon:
We got the clothing line and that will launch in February.

Shelia: Catered to Men or Women?
Akon:
Both. Men's streetwear and a more upscae designs catering more to the women.

I also have the label. We signed Chilli from TLC. We have T-Payne's album coming out.

Shelia: Did you go to school for business?
Akon:
It's more of having street knowledge. When you're hustling, you're just a business man trying to figure out ways to expand. So I just grabbed that whole hustle mentality and put it into legitame business. It's an advantage because you start thinking out of the box. As a singer you create a name for yourself and use the name to open up other doors.

Shelia: You're also providing jobs for others.
Akon:
Exactly.

Shelia: So how often do you visit home?
Akon:
Often as possible.

Shelia: How do you think men can improve relationships with women?
Akon:
Honesty of it. We need to learn how to communicate. If men would learn how to communicate, relationships would be a whole lot better.

Shelia: You could always just put on one of your songs (smile).
Shelia: If you could go anywhere to get away from everything and relax where would you go?
Akon:
Probably Australia.

Shelia: Tell me more about your CD.
Akon:
You'll be able to play the album from beginning to end. It's one of those type of albums.

Shelia: You sound pretty laidback.
Akon:
I'm a real laidback type of guy.

Shelia: What do you find sexy about a woman?
Akon:
Hair (long or short) - Long
Favorite color to see on a woman - White
Jeans or Dress - Both
Favorite fragrance - don't have a favorite, long as she smells good.

Silk Always & Forever Interview

Don't Call It A Comeback

Silk is back on the music scene with a new CD "Always & Forever." It contains classic hits that were originally song by other artists. It's hard to re-do someone else's songs, but these four guys didn't miss a note. Older audiences will appreciate a good harmony. The younger audience will be introduced to love songs that tell a story instead of the normal bump and grind. This is the perfect date CD. It will definately set a romantic mood.

Shelia Goss: Whose idea was it to get back together?
Silk:
Actually, we never broke up. We did have one guy who left the group. Gary Jenkins. He had some other interests, such as acting on stage. We never disbanned as a group. We just had to restructure ourselves. We had to figure out what direction we were going to take. We released an independent album in the later part of 2003.

We were in the process of doing another album when we were approached by Shanachie Records. They wanted to know if we were interested in doing a remake album. We thought it would be a good way back into the mainstream. We set down and picked some songs that we enjoy and went and recorded them. We are re-asserting ourselves. We are re-defining our place in the industry right now.

Shelia: I like the remake album. The songs you chose were 10 of my favorites; especially Secret Garden.
Silk:
It's good to be reminded of good music. We were reminded that it was a lot of good quality music out there and now other people are being reminded as well. It's timeless music. You can slide Secret Garden or Adore right next to Meeting in my Bedroom or Freak Me in your Silk collection.

Shelia: If you like slow jams, this new CD is definately one to add to your personal collection.
Silk:
One thing we're learning is that there are a lot of fans that still appreciate and respect what we bring to the industry. When those fans are aware that we have products out there, they go support us and that's beautiful.

Shelia: You'll probably gain some new fans. The younger generation are more into hip-hop but they like a good slow song too.
Silk:
It works both ways. We're picking up some fans that are older or fans whose musical tastes were more mainstream. The reality is the music we make is love making music or what some call baby making music.

On this remake album, it's something on there for everybody. It's a CD you can play in the middle of the day, in your office or at your family reunion.

Shelia: How long did it take you guys to put the album together?
Silk:
It took about 3 1/2 months once we focused on grinding it. We wanted to make the 4th quarter because it's important to us to come behind this album with a regular Silk album.

Shelia: How did you decide who would sing lead and on what songs?
Silk:
In our group, John John has become like the lead. We appreciate having a "go to" guy like on a football or basketball team. We picked songs that we knew would compliment what he brings as a front man and compliment us as a group from a harmony standpoint. With Secret Garden, we chose that song, because each individual would be able to do their thing. With that song, it was a place for all of us. The purest testament to what we could do as individuals is on that song.

Shelia: Another song I heard that brought back memories was Two Occasions. That's a classic in my book.
Silk:
We picked songs that we enjoyed. It was important that we picked songs that we felt good about.

Shelia: Are you finished with your next CD or are you still working on it?
Silk:
We are working on it. One good thing about the remake album is the exposure we're getting. A lot of people who are producers had forgotten about us, so the exposure translates into possibly working with some other respectable producers.

Shelia: You guys have seen the ups and downs of the music industry. What kind of advice would you give aspiring singers?
Silk:
Do it because you love it. Do it because it doesn't matter if you singing in front of 5 or 50,000 and you'll be content. Be true to your craft and allow that to carry you on your journey.

Shelia: Do all of the members of the group write?
Silk:
Everybody writes and we all have production skills.

We've reached a good point in music. Lionel Richie was saying he stayed in the game long enough for the music to come back around to what he does. I think that's what's happening to all of us who are R & B cats who sing about love.

Silk's Always and Forever is in stores now.

Motion Man Pablito's Way

How did you get your start in the music industry?
Motion Man:
I've been a fan of music all my life. Listening to my mother's Gladys Knight records and Richard Pryon influenced me. I started deejaying. I really got my foot in the door by doing the wake up show in the early 90s in the Bay area.

Did you always know you wanted to do something in the music field?
Motion Man:
When I was younger I wanted to be a dentist. I got excited about this and decided to see if I could make this a full-time gig. I was young when I said I was going to be an MC. You should always have a plan A, B, C. This is what I want to do--put out albums.

What's the name of your CD?
Motion Man:
Pablito's Way. My name is Paul, but in the area that I grew up in, my friends would call me Pablito. The sounds are kind of mixed. Bring you 21 different flavors. It's like a 21 course meal for the listener to digest. I wanted a variety of things for people to listen to instead of giving them the same old thing.

Who did you work with on the album?
Motion Man:
Too Short, Kool Keith, Gift of Gab, a buddy of mine, Miracle C and Fathead out of LA.

What was the motivation behind this album?
Motion Man:
I watch a lot of football. I'm a big sports guy. A lot of the songs I wrote last year during football season.

What do you do in your downtime?
Motion Man:
Play with my daughter(3) {for example, pushing her on the swing)

What other projects do you have coming up?
Motion Man:
Pablito's Way of course...after Pablito's Way comes out then next year I plan on coming out with another one and get on the road a little more.

Lexicon - The Interview

Tell me about the group.
Lexicon: We put out two indie albums in the last 5 years. Over the past 2 years, we locked ourselves in the studio and recorded over 60 songs. We narrowed it down to 5 songs for the EP. Some of these may be on the full length novel that comes out next year.

Oak: Me & Nick, we're the heart of the group. We're actually brothers. We have C Minus our DJ and we have a guitartist and bassist. Those guys are there for our live shows.

Are you going on tour?
Lexicon: Next year, when we release our full length CD. We've been on a couple of small tours. We've played all over the US and Canada. Hopefully, we'll be touring from everywhere next year.

What made you decide to do the EP?
Lexicon: We kind of vanished to our fans, so we felt like we needed to put something out for our fans.

We hope that the EP will bring in a widespread fan base.

What kind of advice would you give others wanting a music career?
Lexicon:
Believe in yourself; appreciate everything that happens along the way and work as hard as you can.

Your sound is unique. I like commercial rap, but I also like listening to artists that go outside of the box, but still sound good.
Lexicon: We're doing what we want to do and giving our interpretation of what hip-hop is. We enjoy commercial songs but not the copycats.

Anything else you would like to say to your fans?
Lexicon:
Many thanks to you and to all the support. Every little thing that's said or done is appreciated. If it weren't for those of you supporting us, we wouldn't have any business doing it.

2XL Neighborhood Rapstar

Introducing Tommy Boy Recording Artists 2XL

Tell me who you are and what do you bring to the group-2XL.
Laze: I'm Laze. I'm 16 years old. My real name's Bennett Armstrong.
We have different personalities that collectively go together real well. I'm more outspoken or agressive.

Royal: I'm Royal, Justin, I'm 16 years old. Personality wise I'm a little bit more laidback. Both of our personalities reflect on our record.

You're both 16 years old. Did you just get signed?
2XL: We first got signed when we were 11 years. We were discovered in a mall out here in LA. After that, we moved to Atlanta for about 6 months and did our demo. We were still young and new to the business so we just wanted to make a record.

Were your parents involved in music?
2XL: We were always surrounded by music. Our dad was a member of the Platters and is from Louisiana, but he wasn't around. Our mom raised us. As a single mother, she exposed us to all types of music...like jazz...classical. Being in music happened naturally. It was destined to happen.

Has your mom been supportive of your music career?
2XL: Yes…she's our number one fan. She's been diagnosed with cancer for 10 years. Our biggest goals was to have our mom watch our dreams come true. She's watched it all happen first hand. She's happy for us and tells us every day how proud she is of us. She's always been behind us. She's been one of our biggest inspirations.

Sounds like she believed in you from the very beginning.
2XL:
She did. She was investing money in our careers long before we had a production company.

What can listeners expect when they pick up your album?
2XL:
The whole album has a good positive energetic vibe. It's personal. By the end of the album, listeners should feel like they know us a little more than before they put the album in. It's about where we come from; what we’ve been through. That's why we call it Neighbor Rap Star.

It's good music. We're real proud of the album. We have something on there for the ladies, for the dudes. There's songs on the album to fit every mood. It’s an album you can listen to all the way through. The young or old can listen to it.

Who all did you work with on it?
2XL: We worked with so many people. Scott Storch did a record on the album that we did with our cousin Cherish. We got bay rapper E-40 on two songs. We got a couple of local producers and others.

Who came up with the name 2XL?
2XL: We did. We used to battle rap a lot and be 2 extreme lyricists. The name has multiple meanings. It could mean to excel or to do something over the top.

For more information about 2XL, visit them on myspace at www.myspace.com/2XLworld or on their website: www.2xlworld.com.

This Is Me Dre Robinson

Dre Robinson is a lyricist and it shows on his new release "This is Me."
Whether he's collaborating with others such as Mobb Deep or Ryan Toby, Robinson spits out some rhymes on some tight beats. Overall, I give it 3 out of 4 stars.

Lyrically, This Is Me is a CD you would want to add to your rap CD collection. ~ Shelia M. Goss, author & entertainment writer for e-Spire Entertainment & BellaOnline Women in Music

Soul of a Songwriter is an excellent CD. Ryan Toby has the right mixture of songs and I truly enjoyed listening to it. There are 11 songs and 2 bonus tracks. My favorite songs on the CD are: Come Back, All I Do, I'm in Love, Change Gon Come, So Good and Don't Worry.

I give Ryan Toby's "Soul of a Songwriter" a 4 out of 4 stars because it has what some CDs are missing--SOUL. ~ Shelia M. Goss, author & entertainment writer for e-Spire Entertainment & BellaOnline Women in Music

Thug Stories with Bone Thugs N Harmony

I didn't know what to expect when I decided to listen to Bone Thugs-N-Harmony's latest CD "Thug Stories." This is the first CD of theirs I've listened to in its entirety since The Art of War. Some of the previous CDs left something to be desired, but I like Thug Stories. Hopefully, this time it won't take them this long to come out with another one. How would I rate it? I would give it a 4 out of 5 stars.

"Thug Stories" is a good comeback CD for the group. ~ Shelia M. Goss, author & entertainment writer for e-Spire Entertainment & BellaOnline Women in Music

Ruben Studdard The Return

Ruben Studdard is still an American Idol. With his latest release "The Return" he shows listeners why he won in the first place. Anybody who knows me knows I love me some Luther, so when I say this about Ruben, it is with utmost respect to Luther fans. If anybody could come close to Luther, Ruben is the man. When you listen to the CD, it makes you want to get close to the "Velvet Teddy Bear." I like the entire CD. For good R & B music, I highly recommend Ruben Studdard's "The Return."

I feel that Luther passed on the torch when I heard Ruben's new CD "The Return." ~ Shelia M. Goss, author & entertainment writer for e-Spire Entertainment & BellaOnline Women in Music

Words with Breanna Lynn

Please introduce yourself.
Well, my name is Breanna Lynn, and I am a budding singer/songwriter, just trying to make it in the music industry.

How long have you been singing?
I have been singing since I was walking in a walker as a baby. I responded to music at a very early age. It's just always been something that I love doing. My first public performance was at the age of 12 when I sang the National Anthem at the Arizona Diamondback's baseball game.

If you had to compare yourself with another singer who would you say your style is similar to?
Well, that question is typically difficult for me to answer because I listen to such a broad range of music, and so many different artists have influenced my style. I would have to combine the styles of artists like Etta James, Natalie Merchant, Jewel, and Sarah McLachlan to even come close to my sound.

When someone picks up your CD what should they expect to hear?
Something different. Something not quite like anything they have ever heard before, because there are so many different sounds and every song is unique. I think there is at least on song for everyone to enjoy.

Are any of the songs reflective of your real life experiences?
Yes, some songs were direct reflections of my emotion or frustrations. The song, "I See You Breath", was written shortly after my grandfather passed away, and I channeled my sorrow into something creative by writing it down to get it out of my system.

Who are some of your favorite singers?
Artist's like Etta James, Ray Charles, Sting, Sarah McLachlan, and Michael Buble, just to name a few. That list could go on for pages.

What's been one of the hardest obstacles you’ve faced thus far?
I think the hardest obstacle that I have faced so far was having to adjust to a more responsible, less dependent life after moving out of my parents' house. You don't realize how much your parents do for you until you have to shoulder some of the burden.

What would your best friend say about you?
My best friend would probably say that I am way too silly for my own good. I have a ridiculous sense of humor. I can find humor in just about anything. You know when you hear that crazy person in the movie theater obnoxiously laughing by themselves? Yeah, that's me.

Is there anything else you would like to say to the readers?
I would just like to tell everyone that I think there is at least on song on the album that everyone can relate too, so please check my CD, Siren, out and see for yourself.

Oct 23, 2006 - Cash Money superstar Lil Wayne pulled down three nominations for the First Annual BET Hip-Hop Awards, to be taped in Atlanta, GA on November 12, and air on November 15. The first ever hip-hop awards presented by the top rated network will pay homage to hip-hop's global impact with an evening of awards and performances. The prolific Lil Wayne has been nominated for Hip-Hop CD of the Year for his platinum-plus opus, Tha Carter II, as well as receiving nominations for Lyricist of the Year and Hip-Hop MVP of the Year.

The award nods come during a flurry of end-of the year activity for the New Orleans native. His long awaited duet album Like Father Like Son with Cash Money founder and mentor Birdman hits stores on October 31. The duo is set to perform their breakout single from the new album Stuntin' Like My Daddy during the awards ceremony. The song is already garnering a crossover and urban radio audience of close to 50 million listeners. In addition, the song corralled over 30,000 ringtone views/plays in the last week alone, and is the #1 most played video on BET and #4 on 106 & Park.

Lil Wayne is also enjoying success with the crossover buzz-song of 2006 Shooter, from Tha Carter II. One of the most talked about songs of the year, the groundbreaking track features Robin Thicke, and recently debuted in video form on MTV's TRL and MTV2's Unleashed, during which the video was played every hour on the hour. The song has garnered Wayne critical acclaim from such respected outlets at The New York Times and the video has become a fan favorite at MTV. The tireless hip-hop star is also featured on Outkast's next single, "Hollywood Divorce," from their Idelwild CD. The new song also guest stars Snoop Dogg, and the superstars will be joining forces in a new video to be shot sometime in the next few weeks.

The First Annual BET Hip-Hop Awards Show will be hosted by comedian Katt Williams, and held at the Fox Theater in Atlanta GA on November 12. The show is scheduled to air on BET on November 15 at 8:00pm EST.

MORE INFO ABOUT JOJO

(New York, NY) Da Family/Blackground Records teen phenomenon JoJo hit un-chartered territory this week, making music history with her new song Too Little Too Late, the debut single from her sophomore album The High Road, which hits stores on October 17th. The sizzling song soared from #66 to #3 on Billboard Magazine's Hot 100 Singles chart, making it the first song to make biggest leap in the entire history of the chart. The song has become a multi-format smash, and the perfect return for the 15-year old Boston native, whose previous platinum-plus self-titled debut album reached #4 on Billboard's Top 200 Albums chart and launched the #12 smash Leave (Get Out). The video for that single also garnered an MTV Video Music Award nomination, making the combustible JoJo the youngest nominee in the history of the MTV Awards.

Her new album The High Road, picks up right where the multi-talented starlet left off, boasting a lineup of much sought after producers including Scott Storch, Timbaland, Swizz Beat, and acclaimed songwriter Sean Garrett among others. JoJo finds herself in unprecedented demand the next few weeks in anticipation of the October 17th release of The High Road, with upcoming promotional appearances including: The Today Show, MTV's TRL, Regis & Kelly, Ellen DeGeneres, Tonight Show with Jay Leno, Megan Mullally and CDUSA.

The prodigy has also been keeping herself busy with an acclaimed foray into movies this past year, starring in Aquamarine with Emma Roberts and RV alongside Robin Williams which debuted #1 in America. She has graced the covers of CosmoGirl, Teen, Sweet 16 and Girl’s Life and will soon grace the cover of Seventeen's much coveted Prom Issue on stands in December. Trained by her Gospel soloist mother, JoJo soon was bringing down the house in every venue she appeared, continuing her musical training and eventually garnering universal recognition on the TV show America's Most Talented Kids. Noted producer Vincent Herbert (Aaliyah, Toni Braxton, Destiny's Child) signed her to his production house, and soon JoJo inked a deal with Blackground Records, releasing her self-titled multi-platinum debut album to critical and commercial acclaim in 2004.

Blackground Records is a venture with Universal Motown Records.

Natalie Cole Leavin' CD

Natalie Cole's CD "Leavin'" rounds up my CD listening party I had this past weekend. Needless to say, this singer with the unforgettable voice does a wonderful job singing songs from various genres (from R & B to pop). The remake of "Day Dreaming," "Leavin'," "Criminal," & "Don't Say Goodnight" are by far my favorites, but I also enjoyed all of the rest of the songs. It's just good to hear Natalie back on the scene.

Insert Natalie Cole's "Leavin'" into your CD player and sit back and relax. Now is the time for those who are not familiar with the original songs to hear a songstress at work.

Natalie Cole welcome back. Listening to "Leavin'" makes you feel good. ~ Shelia M. Goss, author & entertainment writer for e-Spire Entertainment & BellaOnline Women in Music

Gladys Knight Before Me CD

Where do I begin? What can I say about one of the greatest singers of our time. Ms. Gladys Knight does a wonderful tribute to women in music with her latest CD "Before Me." If I could sing, I would sing those songs and add one of hers to the mix. If you are fans of Billie Holiday, Ella Fitzgerald, Dinah Washington, Nina Simone, Sarah Vaughan, Lena Horne and Mahalia Jackson, definately pick up this CD.

Gladys Knight does an excellent job with the re-makes and adds her special flair to each song.

Music lovers don't let this wonderful tribute to women pass you buy, Gladys Knight's "Before Me" is not to be missed. ~ Shelia M. Goss, author & entertainment writer for e-Spire Entertainment & BellaOnline Women in Music

Lionel Richie Coming Home CD

Don't get me wrong, I love hip-hop, pop and almost everything in between, but to hear some of my favorite singers back out on the scene has been "music" to my ears. Lionel Richie's new CD "Coming Home" is R & B and contemporary music mixed in one. He hasn't missed a beat. Listening to him sing on "Coming Home" makes me wish I was in love. For people who want something different than what's being played on urban radio, then "Coming Home" is the CD.

I just got "Coming Home" last week but I've listened to it over & over. I love it.

Lionel Richie's "Coming Home" CD is classic Lionel. If I could give it more than five stars, I would. ~ Shelia M. Goss, author & entertainment writer for e-Spire Entertainment & BellaOnline Women in Music

Sammie the CD

Sammie, the self-titled CD, is a CD I would recommend for music listeners of all ages. Sammie can sing and the music doesn't overpower his voice. Parents can play this CD in front of their kids and don't have to censor it. If you're looking for a CD with good music and a good singer, then Sammie's a must have. It'll make a great stocking stuffer for teenagers.

Lil Flip Interview Freestyle

Monday, October 09, 2006

Lil' Flip "The Freestyle King" is back with a new label (Warner Bros. Records/Asylum Records) and a new CD.

When the interview with Lil' Flip was setup, I had loads of questions ready to ask him, but when I started talking to him, I decided to ask only a few questions and let him do what he does best--freestyle.

Shelia Goss: You were part of that click that was doing chopped and screwed before it was popular. For those that don't know, give me a brief overview of how you got your start.
Lil' Flip:
I started off doing the mixtapes and freestyling. My grandmother played music for the church, so she was like you're going to be in the choir whether you like to or not. I've always been around music. She wanted me to play the piano, but I was like naw that's for girls. I ended up being an entertainer and if I would have taken piano I could have been like Beethoven. I've always been around music...I met Screw…and he let me do a few mixed tapes. I did shows on the weekends because I was still in high school...After that I dropped a solo album that sold a 150,000 units. Labels tried to sign us, but we were like let us sell another 100K first. First one went platinum and the second went double.

Shelia: What inspires you?
Lil' Flip:
On...my first label release...I could have talked about grilles. On my first song I talked about what I've been through. I come up with ideas at any point of the day. I'm an open minded type person. As of now, my fans are inspiring me. My label constantly showing that they care about investing money in me, inspires me. For awhile I wasn't doing music. There's so much BS that comes with it. You end up with enemies for no reason. I was just spending a lot of time with my family...because at the end of the day...whether you got a hit or not your family is going to always be there. When you come into the game so young, you think everybody is your friend but you don't really know...until you bump your head a couple of times.

Shelia: I'm not going to ask you about the so called beefs going on between this click and that, because that's been beat down. But I will ask you in your opinion, what are some ways to improve relations within the rap community? Do you think it's an ego thing?
Lil' Flip:
That's probably the #1 thing...#1 Try to keep your circle small...The more m-f you have around you, the more problems and more different types of attitudes you'll have to deal with. It's about being a good leader and not putting your team in danger behind your foolishness. EGO is the main thing that keeps all that going and the media--because if they get something, they will take it and run with it until they can't run with it anymore.

Shelia: Do you feel any pressure with your new album release?
Lil' Flip:
I feel pressure because I switched labels and folks are wondering what's going to happen...but ain't nothing going to happen differently except that this label really believes in me. They're pushing it and I'm not going to stop pushing it just because I'm with a major. I'm going to do my part regardless. But it makes you feel good to be with a label that's behind you.

I like being with a label that let me do what I do. I direct my own videos. I write the treatments...My videos are creative. I think out of the box. My videos will always have some kind of concept outside of just a girl shaking her a**. A lot of people under rate me and don't want to give me my credit...but fans know that there's no artist out here who can freestyle like me for 15 minutes straight without falling off. If there is, show him to me.

Shelia: Your hooks are usually catchy phrases and easy to remember.
Lil' Flip:
Before I did the music, I realized if you're going to catch somebody's ears, you have to have something that's going to make them remember it. The difference between me and some other rappers is that when you listen to my songs...even after you've heard it one time, you're going to remember a few things...it's not like you have to hear it five times...When I say something, every word I rap is clear...I like to be distinctive...I'm not afraid to try new stuff...I'm a critic when it comes to my hooks and music...I really do take time to put my music together...It takes 2 to 3 months to put it together in the order I want it.

The way I have my album, when you read the song listing, it's like a story.

Shelia: Speaking of your new album, I heard some of the songs got leaked earlier this year so you put some new songs on your upcoming CD. How does an entire CD get leaked to the public?
Lil' Flip:
It's a lot of ways for an album to get leaked…whether it be people working at the studios...someone got it and put it out there...I ordered one my d*** self.

The album comes with a DVD. The albums been done for 2 years. I never stopped recording. I recorded 8 new songs for the upcoming CD. I took out 3 songs and shot 4 NEW VIDEOS. I'll be giving away 5 clover chains. I plan on doing it Willy Wonka style where you can buy the album, get the golden ticket and you'll win a chain.

Eric Pete - Up Close and Personal

Lady Sings the Cruels is the new urban release from author Eric Pete. Read on to find out more about this author of urban and contemporary literature.

Please introduce yourself to the readers. (tell about your books)
In case you haven't heard of me (Where have you been???), my name is Eric Pete. I'm an author of contemporary fiction, some of which has been termed "upscale urban". I first broke into this business with my self-published novel, Real for Me. I didn't realize it at the time, but that was just setting the stage for things to come.

True to my motto "Can't stop. Won't stop. Believe that.", I next delivered one of my all-time favorites Someone's In the Kitchen. Eventually building up a following and landing the right agent, I signed with Penguin Books/NAL. My first book with them was Gets No Love, my ode to pre-Katrina New Orleans. I followed that up with the Essence bestseller Don't Get It Twisted. Now, my newest novel and what I hope to be my biggest to this point, Lady Sings the Cruels is here. I'm really excited about it and think this will be the one to define my entire literary journey.

What type of music do you listen to?
I listen to everything although rap/hip-hop was the first music for me and my generation.

Did your love for hip-hop inspire you to write your latest book?
Hip-hop, even when it's not overtly mentioned, is prevelant through all my works. It's influenced modern society in so many subtle ways.

Lady Sings the Cruels wasn't inspired directly by hip-hop, but you can see the references in it.

What makes your books stand out from the rest?
The "everyday" aspect of the characters and the reality that they find themselves rooted in. I like to take people you see around you everyday and telling the stories you had no idea existed that close to you. I think my books have a real connection with their audience that crosses generations.

Are any of your characters based on people you know?
No, but I do take personality traits/quirks from people sometimes and graft them onto my characters.

What is your opinion on the current state of urban/street lit fiction?
As with any genre, if you can you can write. Those that can write will be around a long time from now. Those that can't and that are just jumping in to take advantage of the market won't be there when the dust settles. Coldest Winter Ever, which really caused the urban/street fiction scene to explode, was well written. That's why it's a timeless classic whether you've lived that life or not. It holds up.

How do you balance writing with your "every day life?"
By prioritizing and using time management. The longer you're in this business, the more distractions pop up that keep you away from the actual writing.

That can be tough. You just have to stay focused and committed. I find myself having to get by without much sleep, but still have to keep my health up for myself and my family. Family comes first, which is what I keep in mind.

Who are some of your favorite singers/rappers?
Hmm Keyshia Cole, T.I., Ludacris, Chamillionaire, UGK.

Name at least three CDs you have in constant rotation in your CD player now.
I don't buy many whole CDs much anymore. Just downloads. My last three downloads were:
*Wine-O "Pop My Trunk"
*Lil Wayne "Stuntin' Like My Daddy"
*DJ Kay Slay (w/ Bun B, Papoose, and Shaq) "Can't Stop the Reign 2006". (Know I had to have that! It was the hook from the original where I got my mantra-Can't stop. Won't stop.)

I also listen to a lot of the European dance/trance/club music. Big fan of the Shapeshifters (U.K.) and play their album heavily.

Who are some of your favorite authors?
Dwayne S. Joseph, Clive Cussler, Robert Doherty, Phillip Duck, Lolita Files, Gloria Mallette. I could keep going, but...

If your life was a reality TV show, what would it be titled and why?
Trying to make me think, huh? I'll go with the motto that used to be on my windshield, back when I used to push 4 15's in the hatch and had nice rims 'n such. "The Adventure Continues..."

If you had to pick a theme song, what would it be?
I have a couple already. Didn't know that, huh? Everybody has a theme song.
I'll go with my original though. The theme song from Shaft. It's close between that one and Survivor's "Eye of the Tiger".

What advice would you give aspiring writers?
Just stay positive, humble, and focused.
Chalk up everything, whether good or bad in this business, as a learning experience.
And the oldest one around...Do Unto Others...

Do you have a website?
Two. Oh? You want to know what they are? (smile)

Yes.

How do you think your music can help revive New Orleans?
My music is New Orleans, so anything that originates or comes from that city can revive it.

Yes.

Do you have any special guests with you on this CD?
Yes.

What can listeners expect when they pick up your CD?
Real good music.

A Few Words with Jon of One Chance

One Chance is the new group on Usher's new label US Records. They've been busy on a promotional tour. Recently, I was able to speak with Jon Gordon, one of the members of One Chance.

Please tell me something about the group.
Michael Gordon(22) my brother, Courtney Vantrease(21), myself (Jon...20),and Rob Brent(19), make up One Chance. We're four guys from the southside of Chicago. Michael and I wanted to start a group. We met Rob and then Courtney. we've been together for about 3 years. We felt Atlanta was the music place, so we headed to Atlanta. We found ourselves grinding and hustling. On one occasion we ended up at Greenbriar Mall and met a guy who knew a guy who knew Usher. We sang for him and now you have One Chance.

How many songs are on the CD?
12 songs or 13 if you include the interlude. We co-wrote a couple of songs. We have some hot producers such as Chocolate Star and Soundz, Shondrae aka Bangladesh

Give me one song off the CD and the menaing behind the lyrics.
Don't Stop: Everybody can relate. It's that feeling you have for someone special and you don't want them to stop doing what they're doing.

How does your family feel?
Our parents are very supportive. At first it was a catch 22. On one hand they can't tell you not to live out your dreams or try to achieve them, but on the other hand they wanted us to go to school just in case.

Who's the quietist in the group?
Mike because he's the laid back one; but honestly it depends on what day it is.

Who is the most outspoken?
Me and Courtney.

Who dresses the best?
Honestly, this is a tough one. It really depends on the ladies prospective.

Who considers themselves a ladies man?
We all consider ourselves but Courtney has this cool and collective swagger.

How has it been working with Usher?
It's been a blessing working with Usher. He's been there for the group 100 percent. He gives us inspiration and has showed us the true ins and outs of the business.

One Chance's debut CD PRIVATE (J Records/US Records) will be released soon.

In the meantime, you can hear the single 'Look at Her' featuring Fabo of D4L:

J Records Emily King

Introducing the multi-talented J Records recording artist EMILY KING.

Shelia Goss: Why did you start singing?
Emily King:
My parents are professional singers. I've always been around it. They put me in their shows. My parents have been my biggest influence.

Shelia: Did you write the songs on your album "East Side Story"?
Emily K.:
Yes, I did. I'm a self-contained writer. It was a huge collaboration with Chucky Thompson. Chucky was a "hit man" with Bad Boy. He did Mary J Blige's "My Life" and worked with Faith Evans. He's an incredibile producer.

Shelia: You're on J Records right?
Emily K.:
Yes.

Shelia: How did you get discovered?
Emily K.:
My mother had a friend at Sony music publishing and one of his writers was Chucky. I brought a demo to my mom's friend and he ended up playing it for Chucky. Chucky and I met the following week and we hit it off. We started going up to different labels. I would bring my guitar, sing and play to the executives. One day we made it to Clive Davis. I sang and got a great respond wand we've been working every since. .

Shelia: Congratulations.
Emily K.:
Thank you...I'm excited.

Shelia: Before meeting up with Chucky, were you looking for a record deal or just writing and singing with hopes of pursuing a record deal later?
Emily K.:
I was really prepping myself. I got out of high school at 16 and had been doing gigs and playing in coffeehouses. I made a demo and thinking positive, I knew somebody was going to hear it.

Shelia: How do your friends feel about your record deal?
Emily K.:
They feel good. They're excited. They want to see me on MTV or BET one day.

Shelia: Have you filmed the video for your single yet?
Emily K.:
We're actually in the process of putting that together. It's going to be exciting.

Shelia: Besides Clive Davis, who is someone you met recently that you were like in awe of?
Emily K.:
I opened up for Common. I'm a fan of Common and he's such a cool dude.

Shelia: When will your album be coming out?
Emily K.:
The single will be out soon and the album(East Side Story) will be out at the top of 2007.

Shelia: How many more songs do you have to record?
Emily K.:
The album's actually done. There's 12 songs on the album. I had a lot of interesting collaborations. It was good.

Shelia: Is there more fast paced songs verses slow paced songs or mixed?
Emily K.:
We mixed it up. We want to give you that roller coast ride. I want people to play it straight through.

Shelia: For those readers who may not have heard of Emily King, what singer would you compare yourself with?
Emily K.:
That's a tough one. I get a lot of comparisons. Sometimes people say Teena Marie, Alicia Keys or Norah Jones. I'm honored to be compared to them but I'm trying to bring my own thing and I hope people like it. Everybody is unique.

Shelia: What do you do in your spare time when you want to relax and unwind?
Emily K.:
I like to crotchet. I knit. I cook. I like to bake. I oil paint. Anything creative. I like hanging out with people and friends, going to the movies and playing pool. There's always something to do here in NYC.

Shelia: What was the last good movie you saw?
Emily K.:
Snakes on a Plane

Shelia: What artists do you listen to the most?
Emily K.:
I listen to singer/songwriters, but I listen to a lot of different things.

Shelia: Pick three songs from your CD and tell me about it.
Emily K.:
Color Blind: It talks about how I feel about life; how I was raised. I'm interracial and it deals with that.

You & I: I wrote it and it was effortlessly. It has a really pure love message in it. I enjoyed singing that one a lot.

It Was You: Definitely a favorite. I wrote it a time ago. I wrote it about my parents actually getting divorced.

Shelia: Last question. How does it feel to be on the label headed by one of the most respected men in music--Clive Davis?
Emily K.:
It's mind blowing.

Be on the look out for Emily King's new CD release "East Side Story" on J Records.

Scion Audio/Visual Releases 12 Vinyl Featuring

SCION AUDIO/VISUAL RELEASES 12 VINYL FEATURING EL MICHELS AFFAIR AND RAEKWON AND SCION CD SAMPLER V.15 MIXED BY COSMO BAKER AND DJ AYRES

Los Angeles - Scion continues to support independent artistic expression through its latest Scion Audio/Visual (SA/V) 12 vinyl release of El Michels Affair and Raekwon and Scion CD Sampler v.15 - Award Tour mixed by Cosmo Baker and DJ Ayres.

Scion Audio/Visual opens up a path that connects creative artists and avid listeners, said Jeri Yoshizu, Scion sales promotions manager. We encourage artistic creativity and the A/V label is one of Scion's approaches to supporting the music community.

The latest 12 vinyl installment, available this month, sees Brooklyn's El Michels Affair paired up with hip-hop legend Raekwon (of Wu-Tang Clan) for a live remix of Raekwon's song with Pete Rock called The PJs, as well as an original El Michels song and a couple interlude/bonus beats. Raekwon wrote some new lyrics for The PJs track, and El Michels flipped it with their signature vintage soul sound.

SA/V brings you Scion CD Sampler v.15 - Award Tour mixed by Cosmo Baker and DJ Ayres. Along with partner DJ Eleven, they comprise The Rub crew.

The Rub started as a monthly party in the summer of 2002 at Southpaw in Brooklyn, and it quickly grew into the best party in NYC (New York Press). Now in its fourth year, The Rub continues to live up to the accolades - packing in a diverse crowd who'll wild-out to hip-hop, '80s, disco, rock, funk, house, reggae and everything in between.

The Rub's Cosmo Baker played a crucial part of Philadelphia nightlife for years - holding down the now-legendary Back to Basics party with King Britt; spinning at house parties back in the day with The Roots; and launching the beloved Remedy monthly alongside Rich Medina. The Rub's DJ Ayres got his start spinning hip-hop on college radio and at parties, and has released upwards of 50 mixtapes in 10 years, prompting the New York Times to call him one of New York's best mixtape DJs.

Included on Scion CD Sampler v.15 - Award Tour are songs by Ghostface & MF Doom, Memphis Bleek, The Streets, Aloe Blacc, Chromeo, Bloc Party, and UK Mercury Prize nominee Sway, among many others. Scion CD Sampler v.15 will be available at upcoming Scion events across the country.

SA/V continues to bring listeners, those with and without the skills to cut it up on the turntable, the heart and soul of music through its vinyl and CD releases.

Look out for future installments of the mix CDs and 12 vinyl from Scion DJ Contest winner DJ Cutler and from Connie Price & The Keystones w/ Big Daddy Kane, respectively.

About Scion Audio/Visual
Scion Audio/Visual (SA/V) was founded to give true artists a voice in a noisy world. Scion has consistently championed independent thinking and alternative culture. With its Audio/Visual in-house record label, Scion continues to promote that culture with a series of CD mixtapes and 12 vinyl releases, both given out for free, which focus on getting exposure for these talented musicians and DJs. With global vision and diversity through expression, SA/V champions individuality with no genre boundaries.

Each 12 release features an up-and-coming live band with a special guest vocalist (an established MC or singer) doing a coveror live version of that vocalist's song. Past collaborations have included the daKAH Hip Hop Orchestra featuring Guru of Gangstarr; The Fyre Dept. with GZA; and Rhythm Roots Allstars featuring Raheem Devaughn, Aloe Blacc and Afrodisiac Sound System.

On the other side of the SA/V concept, the mix CDs span the gamut of hip-hop, funk, soul, reggae, world, and electronic music. Previous installments have featured mixes from Wax Poetics' DJ Monk One, Mr. Scruff & Nicolay, The Oakland Faders, Peanut Butter Wolf & Jazzy Jeff, and others.

Gloria Estefan Releases New CD

Two decades of signature U.S. and international hits by the five-time Grammy Award winning singer, songwriter, producer, novelist, actor, and philanthropist who is regarded as the primary force behind today's English language Latin pop crossover success, are gathered for the first time on THE ESSENTIAL GLORIA ESTEFAN. The two-CD collection, containing 37 songs is in stores now on Epic/Legacy, a division of SONY BMG MUSIC ENTERTAINMENT.

Few (if any) contemporary artists possess the body of work that can be divided between one entire disc of uptempo dance club and remix material and a second CD of ballads - but that is the case with THE ESSENTIAL GLORIA ESTEFAN. Spanning the years 1984-85, when the Big Bang of Latin pop crossover began with the first two English language LPs by Miami Sound Machine - Eyes Of Innocence with "Dr. Beat" and Primitive Love with "Conga" – all the way through her most recent English language album, 2003's Unwrapped, the non-chronological collection shuffles the chapters of Gloria Estefan's musical life with bravura and finesse.

Quick Time Low

Who is Jessi Malay?

You could say Jessi Malay had a strong vision from an early age. When Mariah Carey's "Dream Lover" hit Number One in 1993, young Jessi, already immersed in jazz, tap, and hip-hop dance classes, was inspired to polish her moves. During recess, Malay would herd her girlfriends onto the school playground, tell them they needed to rehearse for an upcoming talent show, and lead her charges through dance routines she had choreographed herself. Of course there was no talent show. "They'd ask, 'When are we performing?' she says. "And I'd be like, 'Soon, soon! Now come on, we gotta practice!" Malay was 7.

"Even at that age, I was very tenacious," she recalls, laughing. But being able to take charge is a valuable skill when you're a kid trying to navigate the world of show business. Malay, a talented, passionate urban-pop singer and dancer from Los Angeles, may be a newcomer to most, but she's actually a veteran performer who began dancing at 2, joined a professional ballet company at 6, started singing at 9, entertained the crowds at the 2000 Olympic Games in Sydney, Australia, at 12, had a hit single with her all-female teen-pop group No Secrets by 14, and now, at 19, is recording tracks for her solo debut album to be released this summer on Reprise Records.

You've got to be made of pretty tough stuff to keep your composure through all that craziness. Luckily Malay, who works a playfully provocative blend of sultry R&B vocal stylings, hip-hop edginess, and indelible pop smarts, is one female who knows the importance of staying strong. Think Janet Jackson, one of Malay's idols, circa "That's the Way Love Goes": confident, sexy, and while we're at it: thoroughly in control.

"Janet is one of the few female artists who has gotten the message out that you can be a commanding woman without losing your femininity and sexuality," Malay says. "You can have both."

That empowering message is boldly conveyed on the songs Malay is currently recording for her album. She even references Jackson on the club-friendly "Gimme," quoting "it's the principle of pleasure" in the intro. Then there's the compelling "King," a potent answer-back anthem aimed at guys with attitude. Check this for the opening verse: "How strange your life would be / If you were on you knees / If I was your lord and you called me Majesty / Next, if I took off all your clothes / Would you feel just like a 'ho / Standing oh so naked there in front of me." Then, Malay delivers the defiant kiss-off: "Repeat after me: I am king / Kiss my ring!"

"Okay, that is a total girl power song!" Malay says, with a laugh. On another, the flirty "Topsy-Turvy," Malay warns her male listeners that girls can be moody, "but this is how we are, so take it or leave it," she says. She switches gears on "The Whole 9," proving her versatility with a love-struck ballad that encourages girls to hold out for a guy who treats her right. Then there’s the mesmerizing, naughty club track "Hypnotiq," which Malay describes as a guilty pleasure. "Girls want to be taken seriously," she says, "but they also want a night out where they can have fun and get crazy."

The majority of the tracks were written by L.A. powerhouse songwriting/production team TOJ — Andy Goldmark and Bruce Roberts — who have worked with such diverse artists as Cher, Whitney Houston, 'N Sync, and Elton John. Malay knew Goldmark from her time with No Secrets - an R&B-pop quintet aimed at 'tweens — who toured extensively with Aaron Carter and released a self-titled album on Jive in 2002, featuring the hit "That’s What Girls Do," which debuted at Number One on Billboard's Heatseekers chart. When No Secrets disbanded in 2003, Goldmark and Roberts called on Malay to supply the vocal for a demo they were working on. The three hit it off and decided to develop a solo project for Malay. She signed with Reprise in 2005.

Since then, it's been a whirlwind of writing (Malay contributed to three of her current tracks); recording (her other producers include Jonathan "JR" Rotem, known for his work with Snoop Dogg and Rhianna, and 50 Cent producer Styles of Dangerous LLC); making guest appearances on other artists' albums (Malay is featured on Twista's "Blessed" as well as an upcoming track by East Coast rapper Gravy); and rehearsing for her live show with white-hot choreographer Mikey Minden (Pussycat Dolls).

"I think people will get what I do when they see me perform," says Malay of her live show. "I have two female dancers and it's a really good balance of smooth, urban hip-hop choreography and sexy, seductive moves that suit me really well. I want people to get that strong female message from me, but I also want them to have fun with my music."

Jimmie Reign Interview - The Lady of the Bay

Monday, October 02, 2006

Shelia Goss: Please introduce yourself.
Jimmie Reign: I am the 1st Lady Of The Bay...Ms. Jimmie Reign

Shelia: How long have you been singing?
Jimmie: I know singers always say they've "been singing before they could even speak", and I hate to sound cliche, but I have. My daddy used to have recordings of me as a baby humming and screaming until I was hoarse. I've been singing professionally since I was 14.

Shelia: If you had to compare yourself with another singer who would you say your style is similar to?
Jimmie: It's funny because in order to find anyone like me, I'd have to pick at least three singers...I'd say Beyonce (she's a total package), Alicia Keys (her writing skills), and Aaliyah( her melodies and personality) all rolled up together...that's Jimmie!

Shelia: When someone picks up your CD what should they expect to hear?
Jimmie:
Pure emotion. My songs say what people always feel like saying but aren't able to put it into words. I don't go for the obvious. I dig deeper to try and make sure my songs can be felt by all ages and genders.

Shelia: Are any of the songs reflective of your real life experiences?
Jimmie:
All of them. I know it may seem unbelievable because I'm so young, but every song I do is special to me because either I or someone close to me has gone through a similar situation.

Shelia: Who are some of your favorite singers?
Jimmie:
El Debarge, Lauryn Hill, Faith, Stevie Wonder (of course), Tamia, Beyonce

Shelia: What's been one of the hardest obstacles you've faced thus far?
Jimmie:
Learning how to stay out of all the drama that comes along with being a part of, and being a female in this industry. I've really had to learn how to keep my personal life seperate from my life as an artist.

Shelia: What would your best friend say about you?
Jimmie:
That I make really corny jokes and that I'm a little weird. That I'm in love with someone new everytime she sees me, that I give great advice (even when it isn't asked for), I'm compassionate and strong, and I make great macaroni and cheese from the box...lol...

Shelia: Is there anything else you would like to say to your fans?
Jimmie:
If you see me out somewhere- say hello! I AM totally approachable, even if it looks like I'm not having the best day. There's nothing better than someone you don't know coming up to you and saying that they know who you are, and they love your music. :)

Tim Dillinger "The Muse" Interview

Shelia Goss: How long have you been singing?
Tim Dillinger:
Literally since I was in the crib. I sang for the first time publicly in church when I was two or three and have had a microphone in my hand ever since. My early influences were the contemporary gospel pioneers: Andrae Crouch, The Hawkins Family and Reba Rambo. My family was very religious, so I had to sneak to hear secular music...I was in love with the music of Marvin Gaye, Rick James, Teena Marie, Chaka Khan...All of those influences started shaping me early...so by the time I was 13 I had this really big voice that people didn't expect. I sang in churches and coffeeshops all through my teens and then started doing dates with Grammy Award nominated gospel artist Beverly Crawford and that's how my professional career began.

Shelia: Tell me about your CD.
Tim:
This CD was born out of so much...It's the story of my coming of age...Finding my authentic self...being willing to speak my own truth regardless of the consequences and as an artist, making the kind of album I wanted to make without commercial concerns. Most of the songs began as poems and I reshaped them to the structure of a song in the vocal booth to the very rough tracks. We took the basic tracks and built out and added a lot of live instrumentation: Strings, horns, flutes, piano, organ...so that it has a very strong live feel. Then special guests like gospel legend Daryl Coley, Frank McComb, the King of Underground Soul and some of my friends from the Nashville theatre scene came in and added their touches. I added spoken word pieces as bridges to help tell the story...and I'm so, so proud of the final result.

Shelia: What can listeners expect when they hear your music?
Tim:
Something heartfelt...Something that creeps inside and unleashes a gamut of emotions...Something spiritual, sensual, honest and pure. I hope that the are "struck by the poetry", as one of my favorite writers once said.

Shelia: What makes your CD different than some of the others in your genre?
Tim:
I think the intensity of the album, both lyrically and vocally, sets it apart...as well as the focus on artistry versus commercial appeal. We just had the release party on Friday and I've gotten emails from people telling me that they can't stop playing it...that it's entrancing to them, which is an incredible compliment. Critics have said that the content makes it stand out...I wish that R&B as a whole would be less concerned with the whole mainstream game and return to it's roots...People like Curtis Mayfield, Marvin Gaye, Minnie Riperton, Teena Marie...who made a very spiritual and ethereal music that was poetic, political, spiritual, sexual...and served a real purpose...and provoked the listener to thought. We've got enough cotton candy...It's time to return with some depth...
Besides singing, what's something you enjoy doing?
Reading is one of my favorite hobbies...I love watching old sitcoms and movies...Going out with friends for a good meal...catching a great live show...

Shelia: How can readers get a copy of your CD?
Tim:
The CD is available at amazon.com, cdbaby.com and timdillinger.com!

Who Is Belo?

The Truth
IN STORES OCTOBER 17
The Legion/Asylum/WEA
www.myspace.com/belo1

The Legion has a whole stable of artists that are going to be released in the next 18 months. Belo is the second artist to be released on The Legion label. Belo is also the first member of Do or Die to go solo.

What makes Belo's project so exciting is that a lot of people have been waiting for his solo project for so long, says Rudy Acosta, CEO of The Legion Records. For him to be the first one of the group to come out with a solo album, it's exciting to see the direction he's taking. His style is very unique within the group, and within the industry, too. He's got that smooth, pimp feel, but he also takes it to the streets. It's a great combination.

During Belo's career with Do Or Die, he was typically given a verse a song to explain his thoughts and views. Now, the Chicago rhyme legend is taking advantage of the extra mic time a solo album provides. That's why he's named it The Truth--he's got a lot he wants to speak on.

I picked it because a lot of the stuff I wanted to express I couldn't express when I was doing albums with Do Or Die, Belo explains. I wanted to touch on some topics that were real truthful, that were really real, so I called it The Truth. I had never gotten a chance to touch on my personal spirituality. I have done a lot on the streets. I lot of people don't know that side of me because they hear me rapping laid-back and smooth but they don't know the street side and the stuff that I've gone through in life.

Belo spits straight street on Outlaws and addresses issues he has with religious misdirection, the terrorist attacks on America, the war in Iraq and the American government on the searing God's Wrath. But Belo gives fans the classic Do Or Die sound Belo helped define, too. One such tune is sexy lead single So Exclusive, which features the soulful vocals of Johnny P, the sensuous production work of The Legendary Traxster and showcases Belo rapping about having an exclusive woman.

ABOUT KELLY PRICE

Kelly Price has been said to possess one of the most extraordinary voices in modern music. Born and reared in Queens, NY, Price's musical talent showed itself at an early age. Price's mother vividly recalls the many, many nights the household was awakened to the sound of Kelly singing out from her crib. As a child of the Church, both of her parents are ordained ministers, music became inextricably intertwined with the emotional fabric of her life, and it was through music that she expressed feelings she was often unable to speak aloud. One day, after being deeply saddened by a book she read for a black history project, Price wrote a song to express the complicated emotions she was feeling. That was her first song. She was 7 years old.

Before the age of 10, Kelly sang on her first recording and by 18, she was recording and touring the world with multi-platinum pop diva Mariah Carey. Always a quick study, Kelly watched and learned the intricacies of studio and production work and soon began to expand into areas other than background singing. Kelly refers to these early years as her "formal education."

As a guest vocalist, Price went on to appear on such acclaimed hit singles as Mariah Carey's "Fantasy," The Notorious B.I.G.'s "Mo Money Mo Problems," P. Diddy's "No Way Out" and Whitney Houston's "Heartbreak Hotel."

In the years to come, Price would share her musical gifts- in vocals, production and writing - with a Who's Who of A-list and legendary artists, including George Michael, Aretha Franklin, Brian McKnight, LL Cool J, Ben Tankard, Mary J Blige, Brandy, The LOX, Donnie McClurkin, The Williams Brothers, Faith Evans, Karen Clarke-Sheard, Yolanda Adams, MASE, Mary Mary, Richard Smallwood, R. Kelly, Eric Clapton, Wynona Judd, Gerald Levert, Angela Winbush, The Isley Bros and Ronald Isley, among countless others.

Though many record labels pursued Kelly as a solo artist, it was her connection with Isley and his relentless belief in her talent that resulted in an alliance between Price and him and the birth of her debut solo effort - Soul of a Woman. That 1998 CD delivered the #1 smash women’s anthem of the year "Friend of Mine," penned by Price. Price followed her stellar freshman effort with platinum-selling Mirror Mirror in 2000, One Family: A Christmas Album in 2002 and the critically acclaimed Priceless in 2003.

Right from the start, Price broke records by reaching Billboard's top spot twice with the same song, having achieved the # 1 victory with no music video at television. No artist has done that since the conception of the instrumental marketing tool of the music video. It was a sweet victory for Price after being told by several music executives that she was talented and beautiful, yes, but, "No one wants to look at a fat girl or buy her records, no matter how good she sounds." Kelly reminded the world that big was indeed beautiful.

Millions of albums later, this award-winning, Grammy-nominated, singer, songwriter, producer, actress and, now, author has only begun to show the world who she is and what she is capable of. Now, Price will expand her reach yet again with the release of her first gospel CD, This Is Who I Am, released by EcclectiSounds/GospoCentric through Zomba.

This Is Who I Am is due for release October 24, 2006.

Texas Chainsaw Massacre: The Beginning, in theaters Oct. 4

SYNOPSIS
http://www.texaschainsawmovie.com

The original 1974 film, THE TEXAS CHAINSAW MASSACRE, shocked and stunned audiences with its bone-chilling realism. The horrifying story, drawn from a series of true events, is considered by many to be one of the greatest thrillers of all time and a landmark of terror that has influenced countless films in its wake. Iconic in popular culture, its menacing evil character, Leatherface, will forever be one of the most recognizable screen villains.

With 2003's remake of THE TEXAS CHAINSAW MASSACRE, starring Jessica Biel, the filmmakers at Platinum Dunes brought new life and vigor to the horror movie genre, while also honoring its predecessor. Now the company continues on that path with a startling prequel, THE TEXAS CHAINSAW MASSACRE: THE BEGINNING, which details the beginnings of the Hewitt clan and exposes their psychotic idea of family fun.

It¹s 1969. The conflict in Viet Nam has exploded to immeasurable proportions, and 18-year-old Dean Hill's (Taylor Handley) number is up. Dean's brother Eric (Matthew Bomer), who has already seen his share of combat, plans to take Dean to enlist in his beloved Marine Corps in hopes of keeping an eye on him rather than letting him take his chances at the local induction center.

But Dean's plans do not coincide with his older brother's. Instead, he plans to confront Eric about dodging the draft after the boys and their respective girlfriends, Bailey (Diora Baird) and Chrissie (Jordana Brewster) head across Texas for a final fling of serious fun.

Soon after their journey begins, the spirited foursome are spooked by a menacing pair of bikers, Holden (Lee Tergesen) and his girlfriend, Alex (Cyia Batten). When Alex chases the group¹s jeep, propelling them into a serious accident, Chrissie is thrown from the vehicle. As Alex attempts to rob the injured trio, Sheriff Hoyt (R. Lee Ermey) arrives on the scene and turns the tables on their would-be assassin. While Chrissie hides in the nearby brush, she watches as the sheriff kills Alex in cold blood and then inexplicably taunts her friends before ordering them into the back of the patrol car.

Unbeknownst to Chrissie, Hoyt is headed back to the Hewitt family home where Thomas who is being groomed to become the terrifying monster known as Leatherface (Andrew Bryniarski) and the rest of the Hewitt clan await. In an effort to save her friends, she attempts to convince Holden to help her, but he is on a one-man rampage to avenge his girlfriend's death. As Chrissie witnesses the horrors inflicted by the Hewitt family upon the people she loves, she realizes she is their only hope of survival.

THE TEXAS CHAINSAW MASSACRE: THE BEGINNING is directed by Jonathan Liebesman and written by Sheldon Turner. The producers are Michael Bay, Andrew Form and Brad Fuller of Platinum Dunes (2005¹s The Amityville Horror). It will be released in theaters by New Line Cinema on October 4th, 2006.

DVD The Tomorrow Show

Shout! Factory announces the release of The Tom Snyder Show: Tom Snyder's Electric Kool-Aid Talk Show, a DVD including psychedelic segments hosted by the late night talk show fixture. Originally airing in 1979-1981, the DVD features interviews with some of the most colorful and well-known characters from the '60s hippie counterculture, authors Tom Wolfe (The Electric Kool-Aid Acid Test) and Ken Kesey (One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest), the Galileo of Consciousness Dr. Timothy Leary, and the band that provided the soundtrack to the era, The Grateful Dead. In addition to interviews with Dead members Jerry Garcia, Bob Weir, Mickey Hart and Bill Kreutzman, this episode features live performances of four songs. The Tomorrow Show: Tom Snyder's Electric Kool-Aid Talk Show DVD is in stores now.

Program Listing:

1. May 7, 1981: The Grateful Dead, Ken Kesey
Tom talks to author Ken Kesey and Jerry Garcia of The Grateful Dead, who perform On The Road Again, Cassidy, Dire Wolf and Deep Elem Blues. Tom interviews Garcia and fellow band members Bob Weir, Mickey Hart and Bill Kreutzman.
2. August 6, 1979: Tom Snyder's interview with Tom Wolfe
Tom Snyder's first interview with author Tom Wolfe focuses mostly on Wolfe's bestselling book, The Right Stuff.
3. October 14, 1980: Tom Snyder's interview with Tom Wolfe
Although their conversation covers many topics, Snyder and Wolfe steer clear of any discussion of LSD or The Electric Kool-Aid Acid Test in Wolfe's second visit to The Tomorrow Show. Wolfe prefers to discuss his then-current project, In Our Time, a collection of his drawings.
4. August 9, 1981: Tom Snyder's interview with Dr. Timothy Leary
Dr. Leary made this rare television appearance when he was appearing at The Bottom Line nightclub in New York as a "stand-up philosopher" a decidedly short-lived career move for him.
