Interview with Author Kendal S Turner

Monday, November 06, 2006

Please introduce yourself to the readers. My name is Kendal S. Turner and I am a poet/Author of two books. Broken Yet
Sustained by God
and Anatomy of The Soul.

How would you categorize your book?
It's kind of hard to categorize my book because I didn't write it for a certain
category. Broken Yet Sustained by God was more of an expression of my soul, my
experiences, my struggles and my journey to become the person who God made me
today. It was my testimony. But Anatomy of the Soul is written from an
observational standpoint of what I see others struggle with, and I try to give
guidance to the reader in how to come out of the struggles that they face. I
would say it is more of an inspirational/spiritual book written in poetic form.

Why did you decide to write your book?
One word-Therapy! I wrote Broken as a release of the burdens and the pain that
I held onto for so many years. Broken was a healing process for me. I had no
idea of all the baggage that I was carrying until I put it all into words. These
words turned into poems that turned into a book, which has brought deliverance
to so many women. I wrote Anatomy of the Soul for the purpose of showing other
broken women that if I can be delivered, they could be delivered as well.
Anatomy of the Soul's poems are followed by a scripture, to reiterate the word
of God, and to give them a revelation of who they are in Christ. I wrote this
book to show people that there is a light at the end of the tunnel. There is
hope.

How can readers learn more about your books and get in contact with you?
They can contact me through my website www.kendalsturner.com. I'm on MYSPACE
too! They can sign my page or leave comments on www.myspace.com/kendalsturner
and I personally answer every email that I receive. They can write me at P.O.

How do you balance writing with your "every day life?"
When the concept or the idea for a poem comes, I try to get to my computer or
pull out a pen and pad to write it down as soon as I can. I have four boys, so
in between changing diapers, helping with homework or running back and forth to
football and basketball games, and spending time with my husband, I use the only
free time I have to do me. I write. Its what I do, I enjoy doing it so it
doesn't stress me out, it just feels good to see the fruit of my labor, but It
don't feel like labor. I would write poems for free just to see somebody else's
life be changed by something I wrote. That’s such a wonderful feeling.

Are you working on anything new?
Yes! I am working on my novel as we speak. My 3rd book will be a memoir titled
Thick Skin. God gave me the title for this book in a dream. In the dream, I
picked up a book that was written by me, with the title of Thick Skin and I knew
that would capsulize my life prior to being completely delivered from my past.
This book will go into explicit and raw detail of everything I've been through.
A person would have to have "Thick Skin" to be able to make it through all of
the struggles that I faced. This book will be raw and I'm not pulling any
punches. I'm going to speak on things in my past that other people might be
afraid to unveil. I'm letting all the skeletons out of my closet and it feels
good! I talk about being molested (that happened to me at age 8) and how that
has affected me to this day. I also talk about how God delivered me from
homosexuality, a stronghold that I kept hidden for years. I speak on my sister
who is battling with paranoia schizophrenia and being a mother of 3 children. I
also touched on my divorce and how my children were completely abandoned by
their father. That's just a glimpse of what the novel will entail.

Who are some of your favorite authors?
I love Joyce Meyers, Juanita Bynum is another one of my favorites, and Maya
Angelou is very inspirational to me.
